KARACHI:

An 18-year-old student of O’ Levels was shot dead while he was studying in his balcony at around 2am on Thursday. The young man, SL*, was targeted allegedly by a police officer’s son who came to S’s house along with five police constables to settle an argument.

According to investigation officer Mobin, Sakrand Training Centre SSP Ghulam Sarwar Abro’s son, SA, came to SL’s house in a privately owned Vigo on Khayaban-e-Shamsheer in DHA while the latter was studying for his O’ level English paper. The group entered the house and opened fire using their officially issued Kalashnikovs, said Mobin.

SL’s brother Zeeshan Lashari, who was on the second floor of the house when the firing started, said he found his brother covered in blood after being hit in the chest and neck. Zeeshan told The Express Tribune that the firing continued for nearly 10 minutes.

The guards deployed at SL’s house retaliated and Zeeshan also joined in after getting his weapon from his room. After the group fled, Zeeshan looked around for the car keys to take his brother to the hospital but realised that it was already too late. “I saw him smiling and then he waved at me,” Zeeshan remembered. “He said goodbye to me and I saw him die in front of my eyes.”

SA was also injured in the exchange of fire and one of his police guards, constable Zaheer Ahmed, was killed. SA, who was also shot, is critically injured and admitted at Ziauddin Hospital. The exchange of fire also left SL’s guard, Ali Bugti, injured.

SSP Investigation Faizullah Karejo told The Express Tribune that the two young men had known each other and the incident was a follow-up of a previous argument. “The two boys had an altercation two days ago and this incident was a continuation of it,” he claimed.

An FIR No. 235/2014 has been registered by Zeeshan Lashari at the Darakhshan police station against SA and the four police constables - Muhammad Rasheed, Yasin, Maqbool and Imran  - who accompanied him. The name of the deceased police constable has not been added in the FIR, which includes Sections 302, 324 and Anti-Terrorim Act Section seven. The four surviving policemen have been arrested by the police, while SA will be arrested when he recovers from his injuries. The police have also seized the Vigo and the weapons.
