Flood alerts to be issued from June 15

Chief Secretary Naveed Akram Cheema on Wednesday said in view of possible flooding during monsoon, the Flood Warning Centre will start issuing flood warnings from June 15.


He said district administrations had been directed to evacuate people living in areas near river banks in case water level rose dangerously.

He was addressing a meeting to review flood arrangements.

Officials of the Board of Revenue, Communication and Works, Irrigation Department, Agriculture, Information, Finance, Energy, Housing, Public Health Engineering, Livestock and Dairy Development, Planning and Development departments were present.

An additional inspector general of the police and divisional commissioners also attended the meeting.

The chief secretary directed the departments to ensure coordination and to regularly monitor areas where flooding was feared. He said the Irrigation Department should complete the strengthening of embankments and spurs before the start of the monsoon season. He directed DCOs to store sand bags and stone along the banks of rivers so that they could be used in time of need. He directed the departments to be ready for implementation of the flood plan. Livestock and Health Departments were directed to arrange adequate stocks of medicines and vaccines.
