FAISALABAD:

A landlord on Tuesday beat and injured a tractor driver and killed his father when they asked for a salary for ploughing his fields in Dijkot, police said.

They said Muhammad Irfan, a resident of Nawan Pind, had worked as tractor driver for Shafiq Raza of Dijkot.

They said Irfan’s father, Muhammad Shafi, had fallen ill and he needed money for his treatment.  Irfan and Shafi had gone to Shafiq to ask for money when the landlord got angry, they said.

They said Shafiq and some of his men beat Irfan and Shafi. The two were taken to the Civil Hospital, Dijkot, where Shafi died. They said a case had been registered against Shafiq and his men who had fled. Naseer Ahmad, the doctor on duty, said Irfan was in critical condition.

Irfan’s uncle, Latif Ali, told The Express Tribune Irfan had been working for Shafiq Raza for several years. “He is from a poor family and had no money for his father’s treatment.”

“He had sold his several household items to buy medicines for his father.”

He said Irfan and Shafi had requested Shafiq to help them but he had refused to pay them before the start of the next month. “Shafi and Raza had an argument and the landlord and his men, including Badshah and Waqas, started beating the ailing man,” Ali said. He said Irfan had tried to save his father but they also beat him with clubs and shovels. “Shafi was already weak, sick… he died. Irfan’s condition is critical,” he said. He said police were called but Shafiq Raza and his men had fled. The Dijkot station house officer said Shafi’s body had been sent for an autopsy. He said they were now waiting for a medical report.

He said a police team had been formed to trace and arrest the accused.
