LAHORE:

An additional district and sessions judge on Monday awarded eight years imprisonment to a man suspected of being a Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan member and found him guilty of possessing 4kg hashish.

The judge also imposed a Rs50,000 fine on the criminal. The court said that if the convict failed to pay the fine, he would have to undergo further six months imprisonment.

The convict had denied the allegations, claiming nothing had been recovered from him.

He said the hashish had been planted on him.

The judge asked the accused whether he had any witnesses to support his claim. He replied that he did not, but insisted that he was innocent.

The statements of five prosecution witnesses, all police officials, were recorded.

The defence counsel said that the alleged occurrence had not taken place in the jurisdiction of the Shahdara police but a case had been registered with them nonetheless.

He said there were several discrepancies in the statements of prosecution witnesses.

The drug trial has started on April 22, 2010 but there had been no progress in it trial till the end of 2013.
