Pakistan cueist registers third successive win after defeating Taqi.
KARACHI:
National champion Mohammad Asif Toba eased into the last 32 of the 30th Asian Snooker Championship after winning his third consecutive match in the event which is being held at Al Fujairah, UAE.
Toba was brutal against Kuwait’s Meqdad Taqi, triumphing 4-1 with scores of 77-08, 37-58, 70-24, 96-01 and 79-20.
Although Toba has moved to the next round, his other compatriots are unsure of their plight.
Youngster Hamza Akbar boosted his chances with a 4-0 win over Hong Kong’s Alan Lin Tang Ho.
Akbar had lost his second match of the tournament which made things a difficult; however, he made a quick recovery to keep his chances alive in the competition.
He was deadly against Ho, chalking up big breaks in a straight games demolition. The youngster won with a scoreline of 88-30, 111-01, 61-11 and 68-25.
A Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) official confirmed Toba’s progress, adding that Asjad Iqbal is also likely to sail through to the last-32.
“Toba is surely in the last-32 of the event courtesy his third consecutive victory,” the PBSA official told The Express Tribune.
“Iqbal is almost through but we still can’t say anything with certainty just yet. However, things are a little difficult for Akbar as he lost a match.”
Meanwhile, PBSA President Alamgir Sheikh will fly to Dubai in order to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports.
