KARACHI:
There is a chance of a strong rebellion from departmental outfits as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to ask them to head regional teams in order to make domestic cricket stronger and more transparent.
The board wants to improve the financial state and quality of domestic cricket. A proposal in this regard has been presented by PCB’s Director Game Development Haroon Rasheed, suggesting that the departments should be asked to head regional outfits for financial benefits. The change is said to help increase the level of competition as well.
However, as reported earlier by The Express Tribune, majority of the departments are against such an initiative and will hold a meeting next week in order to protest against the move.
It has been learnt that the departmental units are in favour of dissolving their teams rather than supporting the change.
“All important department stakeholders will be meeting next week in order to decide our next course of action,” one of the departmental heads told The Express Tribune.
“We don’t want to support regions because we’ve been working independently and things have been running smoothly until this proposal came up. There could be better ways to improve domestic cricket. Departments can only play their role if they are given full power to decide what to do with the squads in domestic cricket.”
‘Summary not sent to Patron for approval’
Reportedly, the summary to implement the new move has been sent to Patron PCB and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for approval but a senior PCB official has denied the moved.
“The summary for this change needs to be approved by the Patron PCB, but it has not been sent to him. Wrong information is being circulated to create panic and pursue vested interests,” claimed a senior PCB official.
The PCB has been hosting the President’s Trophy for departments, while the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy has been reserved for the regions.
MC members divided on the change
The key members of the PCB Management Committee (MC) are also said to have differences of opinion on the change especially important figures such as Zaheer Abbas and Iqbal Qasim.
Both former stalwarts believe that departmental cricket must be allowed to flourish independently and mixing them with regions would only create problems that can affect domestic cricket in Pakistan.
