Conference opens today: Balochistan’s history, culture

An international conference will kick off on Monday to discuss Balochistan’s history, culture and economy, said a press release.
The three-day conference, being organised by the National Institute of Historical and Cultural Research (NIHCR), Centre of Excellence, Quaid-i-Azam University, will be inaugurated by Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik at a local hotel.
Dr Sajid Mehmood Awan, acting Director of the NIHCR said that the conference spans over 10 academic sessions on the history and culture of Balochistan. The event is part of a series of conferences on various regions and provinces.
On the first day historians and researchers will explore Balochistan’s ancient history, the development of Indus civilisation, terracotta art, Chaukundi tombs of the Jams of Lasbela, Climax of Baloch power in the politics of medieval Sindh – a case study of Talpur rule, role of Mehergarh in the development of civilization in South Asia and devolution of archaeology through 18th Amendment. The session will be chaired by Dr Ashraf Khan.
In second session, historians will discuss British period, in the third session, post-independence history of the province will be discussed. In the third session historian and experts will discuss contemporary history.
On the second day the historians and writers will discuss culture, Sufism, lifestyles and ethnic composition, economy and geo-political importance of Baluchistan. While, on the third day, topics like politics and society and political parties, leadership and governance will be under discussion.
Awan said the event will provide an opportunity to understand the history, culture and complexities of the largest province through intellectual discourse and offer solutions for the sustainable peace, progress and prosperity of Balochistan.
Acting Vice-Chancellor and chief organizer of the conference, Dr Eitezaz Ahmad talking about the institute, said that since its establishment in 1973 with the objective to conduct research on the history and culture of Pakistan, “The Institute has so far published over 115 titles in English, Urdu and Persian. The Institute has also been bringing out regularly two biannual journals, namely ‘Pakistan Journal of History and Culture’ in English and the “Majallah-i-Tarikh wa Saqafat Pakistan’ in Urdu,” the VC said.
He recalled that in order to highlight history of important national issues, the NIHCR has been holding conferences and seminars for the benefit of all and sundry.
