Modi condemned Togadia obliquely, by tweeting:
Petty statements by those claiming to be BJP's well wishers are deviating the campaign from the issues of development & good governance.
— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) April 22, 2014
This was good and decent of Modi, though I wish he had been explicit about who he was condemning and for what. It is not the throwing off of his campaign that he should have been concerned about but the fact that such a thing had been said. But more about that later.
The history of these two men, Togadia and Modi, is that both were rising at the same time. Togadia is Modi’s junior in the RSS in terms of age but at one point, during the heat of the Babri Masjid campaign, Togadia was a bigger national figure than Modi. His thuggish manner kept him in the headlines.
This changed after 2001 when Modi became chief minister, and particularly after 2002, when Modi became the Hindutva hero. Togadia is from the powerful Patel community, who is the primary voter of the BJP in Gujarat, and its primary donor and supporter among expatriate Indians. This is why the majority of BJP ministers in Gujarat have been Patels.
Today the leader of the Patel community is indisputably Modi, who is not a Patel but represents their aspirations best. The rivalry between the two ended long ago, and today Togadia is, as Modi said, merely an irritant.
I’m interested in talking about something else, which Modi did not tweet about. What sort of state in India has two decades of Hindutva rule produced where it is easy for Togadia to say what he did in a public gathering? What does it say about Gujaratis in the rule of Modi that they do not want as their neighbour a Bohra, one of the most peaceful and most enterprising of all Gujarati communities, because he is also Muslim?
Togadia was there giving advice because an elite neighbourhood had solicited it. Sadly this is the reality of Gujarat, where unbroken rule by the Hindutva party has produced great bitterness on the ground. The religious poison they have spread has made the state toxic. It is, I would say, normal for the sort of gathering Togadia attended to be formed in all parts of Gujarat. This one was only reported because someone filmed it, perhaps on a mobile phone, and it came out.
Why did that neighbourhood in Bhavnagar feel so offended at a Muslim living next to them, that they applauded Togadia’s insane advice? This is the issue Modi should have addressed instead of his banal tweet expressing irritation that his campaign narrative was being inconvenienced. These things Togadia said are exactly in line with the values the RSS spreads and which Modi himself spread in his decades in that body in Ahmedabad. It was Modi who called Muslim families ‘Hum paanch, hamare pachchees’. What happened to his pitch of development and good governance at that time? He can hardly disown Togadia now only because he doesn’t want the spotlight away from him. What Togadia said and did is merely reaping the hatred that Modi himself has helped sow.

@VINOD: Isn't is what RSS and BJP has been asking ever since, that no community should be given "special" treatment? Aren't they asking that India should be governed by just one book and that is Constitution? Why should one community be allowed to be run by their religious book? Didn't we gave land to them already to run their business as per their book? So when BJP and RSS ask for that, they are divisive while you admit to have a India with common code for every one.
@Gp65: Request please read an article by Kuldip Nayar published on ET today. regards.

@Gp65: You ask me "What exactly HAS Modi done?" To understand what Modi has done it very important what is your age group. When I say Modi I do not mean the individual. What I do not subscribe to is the philosophy about India that he represents. When he talks about "Hindutva" he is not talking about the Hindutva that majority of Hindus understand or follow. His Hindutva is divisive and he believes that being Hindu is an auto certification of patriotism. Where as, Hindutva as I understand and have seen my ancestors practice is most inclusive and tolerant of each faith, practices, customs and diverse point of views. This is the Hindutva preached and practiced by thousands of Hindu saints spread all over India. Read Mira, Nanak, Surdas, Kabir, Dadu, Raidas and so on. See how the divergent views of Jainism, Budhism, Aghor Panth, Vaam marg and naastiks like 'Charvak' and many many more were treated with respect by our ancestors. I subscribe to An India where no religion, community or thinking is special or more privileged than the others. I only pray that ET permits this reply on board. Regards.

@VINOD: What exactly HAS Modi done? He has been acquitted by the Supreme court of complicity in 2002 riots and Gujarat has been riot free for last 12 years. The latest accusations of crony capitalism are also fake when Supreme court itself has said that Gujarat's land acquisition process was a model for other states. A state that used to have drought 7 out of 10 years now has had compunded growth of 10% for over 10 years - hardly a development model where elite alone benefit.
@rasgullah: Are you a copy cat of Pakistan or their mirror image. be truthful and accept what is wrong and not in line with our culture and religion.
@1984: How does this justify what Modi and Amit Shah and others of BJP doing. Two wrongs do not make one right. In fact these people do not understand abc of Hindu thinking and practice. They are messengers of hate and destruction. They do not know what are they doing to this great country, a unique country by sowing hatred. Their own children and grand children will suffer for their doings.
@Liaqat: FYI,Neil Armstrong never converted to Islam..He had denied it many times....So is Sunita Williams, she never converted to Islam....
Besides,if you embraced Islam and allowed to get 'lifted' up....My congratulations to you...Enjoy your life here and hereafter in heaven....Allow us infidels to live their lives as a pointless waste and then suffer in hellfire.....
Keep thy religion to urself and dont shove into our throats.....
@water bottle Embrace Islam and feel the strength of the greatest religion. Famous people like Niel Armstrong, Cat Stevens, Chris Eubank, Jemima Goldsmith, Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,Malcolm X have famous peace in Islam. Islam is the perfect religion. Open your heart to Islam and let Islam lift you up. You will realize that till you embraced Islam your life was a pointless waste.
@Biswajeet Ramnath: I hear some serious sour grapes. The Congress and left parties are just as culpable as the BJP in pandering to the rich and the business houses. The fact is this time round, the business houses are not giving Congress any money because they have not delivered on the last payment offered to Congress five years back. The Manmohan Singh government was sleepwalking for five years while Modi built Gujarat into and industrial powerhouse. Is it any wonder every foreign government and trade delegation make a beeline to Modi's door and then take the flight home out of Ahmadabad instead of stopping by New Delhi.
@Biswajeet Ramnath: Just like Hitler all the big businesses and business men support him. In Germany and Europe it was Krupp, Bofors, Mercedes, etc. Because he ratcheted up arms sales, manufacturing etc. And these businesses profited. Just substitute Muslims for Jews. Wow! Godwin's Law kicks in within 7 comments. A great way to demonstrate the intellectual poverty of the anti-Modi brigade - many thanks.
@water bottle: Still doing your Muslim hate mongering in a Pakistani paper. Be glad ET allows this. Pretty sure you are banned from posting hate comments in Indian papers. Very positive you are banned there.
ET please allow response to this Muslim and Pakistani hater.
What Mr Togadia said is totally wrong and requires an apology from him, having said that i dont understand ur habit of modi bashing from whatever link that u can create, for your information modi is not in good books of Togadia and he wants to ruin his campaign or social harmony with these types of comments, EC is taking action against him but tell me Mr Akar Patel why you only cover Modi in every article of yours and no other leader, your bias towards anti modi and anti BJP theme is clearly reflected in below standard articles that are published here or Firstpost, Suggest you to take some time out of your hectic anti modi campaign and look at the comment section of any of your article, you will be surprised and bewildered. @ET cant you guys create a feedback/rating section below every article to understand viewers feedback and satisfaction/dissatisfaction with any of your authors articles???
The thing about prejudice is it'll lead to selective amnesia.
Shazia Ilmi, from AAP, exhorted Muslims to "become more communal". Till now, there has always been a favourable reporting of AAP in this Author's articles.
But, someone who is not even in BJP says something, an entire article is dedicated to the remark.
Truth is not about telling the truth, but also upholding it unbiasedly.
Nobody who supports BJP is supporting what Togadia said(who is technically not from the BJP). But, when a similar kind of incident from the opposing parties go ignored, then bias is definitely at play.
Patelji, you write with an open heart. I have always liked your views. I am normally glad to hear comments by Indians on Pakistan in general, mostly negative but not always incorrect. I am disappointed that none of them have commented on what you are telling us. It appears objective analysis is not part of those comments. I know in South Africa people were not supposed to buy property in white areas, but it is happening in India? The largest democracy on earth? I am not anti India and still feel most of hindus are more tolerant than what we read. But I agree things must improve further. I am glad you are pointing that out. I like liberal people like you. I wish there were many more, on this side of border and across.
Mr. Akkar Patel,
What you say is entirely right. Gujarat is indeed a polarized house. And it isn't a right thing.
But, let us also consider how this problem can be taken care of. It can only happen when the virulent section of RSS can be overcome by the moderate sections within. It can only happen when RSS stakes are far higher in maintaining communal harmony than spreading hatred.
RSS may not have missed the point that in past decade the development agenda works far better with people than the communal one. In places where RSS tried its communal agenda BJP lost heavily (eg. Karnataka/Mangalore, Orissa/Kandamal, UP for over a decade).
The best safety against the narrow minded 20% of majority community in India is the rest of 80% of majority community. It rewards BJP when it focuses on development and punishes it when it turns destructive (eg.2004 after 2002).
Having said all this, do enlighten us on what exactly are the options before Indian voter? You keep baiting Modi, but there really aren't much choices for Indian voter who wants to see development and job creation. We can't have socialist ruin us further. It is far more dangerous to have 25cr unemployed youth in next 10years!!
Everyone knows what Modi is. A hate monger. His whole politics his philosophy his demagoguery is built on inciting hatred for Muslims Just like Hitler all the big businesses and business men support him. In Germany and Europe it was Krupp, Bofors, Mercedes, etc. Because he ratcheted up arms sales, manufacturing etc. And these businesses profited. Just substitute Muslims for Jews.
"I’m interested in talking about something else, which Modi did not tweet about. What sort of state in India has two decades of Hindutva rule produced where it is easy for Togadia to say what he did in a public gathering?"
Let me answer that question with a series of questions.
What kind of socialist, secular rule of a state like UP produces frequent riots?
What kind of secular rule does AP has (which has been predominantly ruled by Congress) where the leader of its alley calls for slaying Hindus?
I also want to ask...
What kind of a Hindutva state Gujrat has been that a mob of Muslims burned down a train full of innocent Hindus?
Isn't this happening daily in Pakistan? So why is it news here? India should learn from Pakistan on how to solve the minority problem as they succeeded where even Hitler couldn't.
Great article! Now get ready for the usual Internet warriors hopelessly bending over backwards to defend their idol.
The reality of India is that there are many such neighbourhoods and Mr. Patel himself may live in one of them, but it does not suit him to acknowledge it. For example in Hyderabad (surprisingly Mr. Patel does not ask what kind of a state allows people like Akbaruddin Owaisi to make the kind of statements that he did last year) there are Hindu colonies and Muslim colonies next to one another and very little cross-purchase takes place - when my family moved out of there, we were specifically requested by the residents association not to sell our apartment to the Muslim. In Kerala, although unlike Hyderabad, Hindus sell property to Muslims because they have the money to invest, the traffic is always one-way; Hindus move out of an area once Muslim population crosses a certain level. In UP, Muslim areas are called just that, Mussalmaanon ka ilaaka, and you know it when you get there from the distinctive clothing of men and women. The reason for this segregation is ostensibly the consumption and smell of meat that is offensive to Hindus, just as I am sure that Muslims would feel rather offended if someone started selling pork chops in an area where they are in majority. This does not mean that you can force someone to leave - in none of my examples above is such a practice seen or condoned.
What about the speeches given by SP leader Azam khan and our beloved AAP candidate Shazia Ilm?? Were they allies of BJP??
Also who can forget Akbarudin Owaisi's open challenge that muslims will kill all Hindus in India??? Is he part of NDA alliance???
Next you will blame the activities of EDL and Golden Dawn on Modi too
Modi's bad for the entire region. Period. His vile, unrestrained, ultra-nationalist rhetoric is dangerous in a part of the world where you have two stupid armies aiming their nukes at each other.
