Say no to fat: Experts for awareness to eradicate obesity
The problem causes diabetes and other health complications.
ISLAMABAD:
As a major health issue, obesity has not been receiving much attention in Pakistan. However, its implications for a patient’s well-being are significant, and its rising incidence across the country disturbing.
To help create awareness about obesity and its treatment, a walk was held on Thursday, said a press release.
A diverse array of people participated in the walk themed “Say No to Obesity”, organised by Vagus Foundation. The participants marched to Faisal Avenue in F-8/3.
Addressing the participants, Dr Ghulam Nabi Qazi, a representative of World Health Organization (WHO) said that understanding obesity is the first step towards its eradication.
“Most people do not understand the benefits of good health and an optimum weight, therefore there is a need to create awareness among them,” said Qazi.
Capital Development Authority Health Director Dr Hassan Urooj reiterated the importance of a balanced, quality diet.
“Obesity is a common cause of many diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. It has been estimated that 26 per cent of women and 19 per cent of men in Pakistan are obese,” shared Urooj.
Dr Rana Irfan, a pioneer at the foundation and a hair restoration surgeon, said that the event was organised to create awareness about the issue, which silently kills millions around the world each year.
Pakistan is among the countries where obesity is on the rise, he added, the irony of the situation being that many of us are unaware of several harmful diseases caused by obesity, including heart ailment and cancer.
The walk culminated with a demonstration of easy and core exercise moves to bust obesity by fitness and public health trainer Saeed who informed the participants about the necessity of physical activity.
