The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday stayed elections of the Punjab Bar Council (PbBC), scheduled for Saturday (tomorrow). The PbBC’s executive committee chairman and vice chairman were to be elected in these polls.
Justice Ijazul Ahsan passed the order on a petition by Niaz Ahmad who had challenged the membership of 13 PbBC members. His counsel said under the rules, a council member ceased to be one once he was appointed to an office of profit. He said several PbBC members, including Rana Abdul Rehman, Muhammad Mazhar, Nawaz Ali, Ahmad Nadeem, Ghulam Murtaza, Rana Muhammad Akram, Rana Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Akram Mailk and Rana Abdul Ghafar, were now holding offices of profit. He requested the court to bar these members from voting in Saturday’s elections.
