Police needs Rs120 million to provide compensation to fallen cops, SHC told

IG police says 250 policemen have been killed in fiscal year 2013-14 so far, have paid Rs496.8m in compensation.

Sindh police’s new chief Iqbal Mehmood told the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday that between 18-20 policemen are rendering their lives in the line of duty every month, adding that his force needs an additional Rs120 million to provide these families compensations over the next three months.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) which is hearing a petition against delays in compensation payment to families of fallen cops. A non-government organisation had alleged that police authorities have not compensated the families of as many as 142 cops who were killed in the line of duty.

On Tuesday, the Additional Advocate General Adnan Karim Memon filed comments on behalf of IG Iqbal Mehmood giving details of compensation payment to the legal heirs.

In his comments, the IG said 250 police personnel had been killed since July. During this time, compensation amount totaling Rs496.80million was paid to their legal heirs, against the budget amount of Rs360 million.


Noting that this According to Mehmood, this amount was 407 times higher than other financial year, he said Rs23.10 million had to be re-appropriated from the total allocated amount was released by the finance department.

The finance authorities said they had also released an additional grant of Rs17 million bringing the total to Rs506.9 million.

IG Iqbal Mehmood said land spanning 300 acres have been carved into 4,525 plots in three categories for the policemen.
