State bank of Pakistan: Acting governor’s appointment challenged

The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices to the finance secretary, the deputy attorney general and others on a petition challenging the appointment of the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) acting governor, Ashraf Mahmood Wathra, in alleged violation of appointment policy.
Headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, the bench asked them to file their comments by May 5.
The appointment has been challenged by an NGO, True Line International Foundation, which took the finance secretary, Wathra and others to the court.
The petition states that the acting governor of the central bank is in violation of the State Bank Order 1948, service rule and other provisions of law as well as practices protected and guaranteed under the constitution.
The lawyer of the foundation Abdul Wahab Ansari said, “Appointment of an influential and non-experienced incumbent (Ashraf Mahmood Wathra) with no exposure to the regulatory provisions will amount to further degradation of the SBP.”
