Sindh minister for information, archives and local government Sharjeel Inam Memon has directed all municipal authorities to chalk out effective rain-emergency plans, especially for the desilting of sewage and storm-water drains, prior to the monsoon season.
He was presiding over a meeting at his office on Wednesday. The minister asked the officials to ensure that efforts are made for the removal of encroachments from parks, playgrounds, green belts and pavements. The fumigation to get rid of mosquitoes, especially the ones causing dengue haemorrhagic fever, should be completed on a war-footing basis under the aegis of the deputy commissioners (DCs), he added.
Administrators and municipal commissioners should ensure the removal of illegal signals on roads and major avenues, he said. “Out-of-order streetlights should be repaired or replaced.”
Karachi commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui, local government secretary Muhammad Jawaid Hanif Khan, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation administrator Rauf Akhtar Farooqui, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board managing director Qutubuddin Shaikh, several DCs and administrators of different districts of the city attended the meeting.
The minister directed the KMC administrator to ensure the availability of required machinery and funds to meet these directives. A compliance report should be furnished to the local government secretary through the DC of the relevant district within 15 days, he added.
During the meeting, the minister warned that if any dengue case was reported at a hospital, it will lead to stern action against the relevant official. The meeting was informed that all ongoing construction work in the metropolis, especially on flyovers on Sharae Pakistan, should be completed within a month and the debris should be disposed of properly.
On the occasion, the KMC administrator presented a report to run CNG buses on the streets of Karachi. He said that 22 CNG buses have been made functional while another 10 would be repaired.
