Squash camp for Asian event to begin today

The Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) will organise a training camp for senior players from Thursday at the Hashim Khan Squash Complex in Islamabad for the upcoming Asian Team Championship to be played in Hong Kong in June.
The camp will be headed by national coach Jamshed Gul, under whose guidance Pakistan have achieved both Asian Individual and Team Championships in seniors and juniors category.
Gul helped Pakistan produce an Asian individual champion last year after a long gap of 15 years as Amir Atlas Khan lifted the crown in Islamabad, beating Kuwait’s Abdullah Al-Muzayen.
Amir’s quest was helped by crafty left-hander Farhan Mehboob, who defeated top seed Malaysia’s Ong Beng Hee in his first match at the event.
Mehboob had also led Pakistan to the Asian Senior Championship despite having a depleted team.
Gul hopes that the two best players will once again work hard in the camp to achieve success.
“Our camp will begin from Thursday where we have called 10 players including Amir and Farhan,” Gul told The Express Tribune.
“We want to prepare our players to achieve top level going into the competition because we want to defend our titles. Amir and Mehboob will be key for us and it’s important to get them fit and in shape ahead of the important championship.”
The official added that the federation has laid out important plans for this year and he wants his players to deliver. Extra emphasis will be laid on their fitness before they compete in important championships and Professional Squash Association tournaments.
Gul also revealed that Yasir Butt will not be a part of the camp as he has been playing in the US.
