On strike: Municipal employees continue protest

The prolonged protest has had a negative impact on the city’s public cleaning services.

DI KHAN:
Employees of the Municipal Committee (MC), DI Khan are standing their ground and protesting for unpaid salaries for the last three months. For the fifth day, employees set up a protest camp near Sabzi Mandi on Monday, demanding the authorities to pay their wages. The prolonged protest has had a negative impact on the city’s public cleaning services, with residents complaining that heaps of dirt and garbage have collected along roads.  This is especially problematic in the rainy season, as the city is frequently flooded during heavy rains with heaps of garbage choking rainwater drains. Such was the case on Sunday, when heavy rainfall flooded streets and caused widespread damage to houses and crops. Residents claimed that the MC employees’ boycott was a major factor in the accumulation of rainwater in the streets. Sardar Qisar Khan Miankhel, a leader from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, tried negotiating with disgruntled employees so that they resume work, but protesters refused to give in until their demands are met.
