PESHAWAR:
Aerial firing, over-speeding and violation of traffic rules were cited as major causes of head injuries and related deaths at a seminar on World Head Injury Awareness Day on Saturday.
The event was organised by the Department of Neurosurgery of Northwest General Hospital and Research Centre Hayatabad and was chaired by Professor Dr Tariq Khan Hashim.
It included a symbolic walk and presentations on relevant topics by the Principal of College of Home Economics Kaneez Fatima, chief organiser Dr Faiqa Filza, Dr Mehwish, Dr Jalal Afridi, along with students.
On the occasion, a doctor at Northwest General Hospital, Dr Musarat explained that head injuries can be devastating and cause major psychosocial complications. She said many individuals suffer serious brain injuries that are largely viewed as inconsequential, but in reality such injuries cause impairments that destroy lives.
She informed that 10 million people worldwide sustain various types of head injuries annually, adding that 400 patients from across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Fata come to Northwest General Hospital with head injuries every year.
The participants wore various badges and bands during the walk after which a poster and booklet competition was arranged. The top three participants were given cash prizes by the hospital organising the event.
