Australia Women fought hard to defeat West Indies Women by eight runs in the first semi-final of the World Twenty20 in Mirpur on Thursday.

Deandra Dottin (40) led a late charge along with Stacy-Ann King (36 not out) to keep the West Indies interested in the chase of 141 with a 78-run stand, but Australia stood out as the better team in the end.

Although the Australia bowlers ran out of ideas during the third wicket-stand between Dottin and King, they quickly closed all escape routes once the partnership was broken.

Earlier, Australia posted 140 courtesy Elyse Villani (35), Meg Lanning (29 not out) and an energetic last five-over charge by Alyssa Healy who scored an unbeaten 30 off 16 deliveries.

The defending champions have now advanced to the final and are one step away from completing a hat-trick of Women’s World Twenty20 title as they face the winner of England-South Africa second semi-final match.
