SUKKUR:

Scores of wheat growers staged a protest against what they said was the high-handedness of the food department at Dera Morr near Kashmore on Monday.

The protesters, carrying placards and banners, were led by general-secretary of Sindh Abadgar Board’s Kashmore chapter, GM Khoso, and shouted slogans against the food department officials, who according to them were exploiting the growers.

The protesters blocked the National Highway, due to which traffic between the three provinces, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan, remained stuck for two hours.

Khoso said that the wheat price should be Rs1,400 per 40 kilogrammes (kgs) instead of Rs1,200 per 40kgs. Huge stocks of wheat were being smuggled to the Punjab and Afghanistan with the connivance of the food department, alleged Khoso, adding that the poor growers were not allowed to sell their yield in the open market.
