LAHORE:

“The government should construct the Kalabagh Dam as soon as possible,” said Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Moonis Elahi on Sunday.

He was addressing the PML-Q Youth Wing convention.

Elahi said India was behind the anti-Kalabagh dam campaign.

He urged his party’s youth to build consensus on Kalabagh dam.

Elahi said the dam would help generate 3,600MW and reduce annual electricity generation cost.

Moonis Elahi invited the people of Sindh, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa and Balochsitan to a fresh dialogue on Kalabagh dam.

He said with the construction of Kalabagh Dam, Sindh could get 4MAF, KP 2. 2 MAF, Balochistan 1.5 MAF and the Punjab 2 MAF of additional water which improve the agriculture sector of these provinces.

Elahi accused the government of rolling back successful initiatives for the youth started by Chaudhry Pervez Elahi’s government and of converting Pakistan into a loan-borrowing country.

Elahi said the government was deliberately letting the potential of Pakistan’s youth go to waste.

He said 40 MAF water was going unutilised, saying it could be used to produce 50,000MW electricity at Rs2.5 per unit with an annual saving to the country of over $10 billion.

“They [the government] increase electricity bills every month but are not doing anything to increase electricity generation,” he said.

Elahi said the chief minister’s laptop scheme and the youth loan scheme was a waste of national wealth. The convention was also addressed by Waqas Mokal, Zulfiqar Pappan, Faraz Awan, Ajmal Zia Cheema and Asad Riaz Baloch. PML-Q senior leaders Chaudhry Zaheeruddin Khan, Muhammad Basharat Raja, Bao Rizwan, Bilal Mustafa Sherazi, Malik Shakil Sikandar, Seemal Kamran, and Samina Khawar Hayat.
