SUKKUR:
Seven members of a family were gunned down on Saturday night by a group of armed men over an old enmity in Shikarpur's Kalar Karo village.

Late on Saturday, a group of armed men raided the village, which is within Rustam police limits, and broke into the house of a labourer, Hussain Bux Marfani. The men then opened fire at the people sleeping inside. As a result, a woman was killed along with her daughter and five sons, while her niece was also injured.

Those killed are Panah Khatoon - wife of Marfani - her 18-year-old daughter, Abida Khatoon, and her five sons - 22-year-old Imam Din, eight-year-old Nadeem, 10-year-old Irshad, 12-year-old Takko and one-year-old Muqeem. Her niece, 13-year-old Sakina Bibi, was also injured in the attack and was taken to the Lakhi Ghulam Hospital.

Rustam police arrived at the crime scene and moved the bodies to Civil Hospital, Shikarpur, for post-mortems. After the post-mortems, the bodies were taken to Jagan, near Shikarpur, for burial.

The motivation behind it

The people of Kalar Karo claimed that the killings were motivated by an old enmity between two groups of the Marfani tribe. The enmity between the two groups started after a dispute over a piece of land in Jagan resulted in a murder.

To avoid further bloodshed, Marfani moved to Kalar Karo along with his family. A labourer by profession, Marfani was working in Ghotki when the armed men attacked his house and killed his entire family.

The relatives of the slain family are claiming that, while the incident was indeed motivated by an old enmity, it was the Teghani tribesmen - rather than those from the Marfani tribe - who were behind the killings, Rustam police station head constable Irshad Ali told The Express Tribune.

According to him, the relatives claimed that the family was murdered to avenge the kidnappings of Sardar Tegho Khan Teghani's brother and nephew - the two were kidnapped 15 days ago and were later recovered from the katcha area of Shikarpur. Despite the seven murders, the police have yet to register a case.
