Motorcycle rally: Even pillion riders should wear helmets, says motorways IG

Every motorcycle rider should wear a helmet, even the children riding pillion. It is for their safety, after all.


The importance of helmets in road safety was one of the two main messages at a motorcycle rally the National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) North Zone organised on Wednesday.

The other message was to pay tribute to independence heroes. The rally was earlier supposed to take place on Pakistan Day, March 23, but was postponed till Wednesday.


The motorcycle rally started from the Motorway Toll Plaza at Golra and ended at Aiwan-e Quaid at Fatima Jinnah Park. NHMP Inspector General Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema was the chief guest of the event.

The motorcycle rally, led by Deputy Inspector General Muhammad Zubair Hashmi and Senior Superintendent Police Mian Saeed Khan, started from the main Motorway Toll Plaza and ended at Aiwan-i-Quaid at Fatima Jinnah Park.

NHMP officials said that in 80 per cent of motorcycle accidents, lives can be saved if riders wear helmets. The DIG said riders should wear safety helmets even if they are on a short journeys or riding pillion.  He said over two-thirds of bikers on Grand Trunk
Road have started to wear helmets due to police enforcement.

IG Cheema also distributed safety helmets and gifts among participants of the rally.
