Whale-shark dragged onto Karachi harbour
Fishermen claim it was accidentally caught in their net, WWF spokesperson says the shark was killed.
KARACHI:
Fishermen dragged a 16-18 foot female whale-shark onto the Karachi Fish Harbour on Wednesday, Express News reported.
The whale was seen lying on the harbour with blood near its head.
The fishermen claimed that the shark got caught in their net accidentally and they dragged it to shore but a World Wildlife Federation (WWF) spokesperson said that the shark was killed.
Whale sharks are highly valued on international markets and demand for their meat, fins and oil remains a threat to the species, according to the WWF website. The species face a high risk of extinction in the wild.
Restrictions should be imposed on killing these animals, the WWF spokesperson told Express News.
The WWF team reached the harbour.
