LAHORE:

The general body of the Lahore Bar Association on Monday unanimously passed a requisition against the Punjab Bar Council’s proposal to extend the requisite experience for a lawyer contesting the PbBC elections. The meeting was held at the Aiwan-i-Adl.

Several lawyers spoke in favour of the requisition. The PbBc’s decision will deprive several lawyers of their right to contest the elections, the lawyers addressing the meeting said. They said lawyers had always been at the front of revolutionary movements in the country and they had never shirked from sacrificing their lives for the supremacy of law. LBA general secretary Chaudhry Saleem Ladhi said the recommendations would be sent to the PbBC in a few days.

Advocate Sardar Zulfiqar had filed the requisition, signed by 83 lawyers, requesting that the PbBC be stopped from extending the required experience of lawyers contesting the PbBC elections from 10 years to 15. Zulfiqar said certain members of the PbBC had gotten the summary [to extend the required experience] passed with the intention to bar some lawyers who had 10 years of experience from contesting the elections.
