Govt releases Rs500 million for Tharparkar survivors

Rs500 million for second quarter would be disbursed in May this year.

ISLAMABAD:
Finance minister Ishaq Dar said on Monday that the government has transferred Rs500 million under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to banks for disbursement among the 77,000 families affected by famine in Tharparkar.

The minister said the remaining Rs500 million for second quarter will be disbursed in May this year.

During his visit to Tharparkar, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had announced aid of Rs 1 billion for the affected families of Tharparkar.


On March 13, 2014 ministry of finance had decided to provide aid of worth Rs 10,000 to each affected family through the existing Income Support Cards in two quarters.

It was revealed that there are 77,000 families registered under the BISP live in Tharparker. Each recipient in this area would receive additional Rs6,400 per month besides Rs3,600 already receiving under the welfare programme.

The Finance Minister said that the enhanced amount will raise the purchasing power of the 77,000 families so that they could buy food stuff etc of their choice.
