They shouted slogans against the government and demanded it pay Rs 2.5 million in compensation to the families of those people who were killed while all those persons who were injured should get Rs1 million each. Organisation leaders warned that if the government fails to arrest the perpetrators, the traders will hold shutter-down strikes across Sindh.
Despite a ban on pillion riding, on October 19, six armed motorcyclists entered the Shershah scrap market and opened indiscriminate fire, in which at least 12 people were killed on the spot and 14 others were injured. The assailants managed to escape after firing. Ten bodies were moved to Civil Hospital, Karachi. They were identified as Zubair, 28, Umair, 30, Nasir, 25, Tariq, 25, Saeed, 24, Kashif, 30, Amjad, 32, Ghulam Rasool, 28, Junaid, 20, and an unidentified man. Meanwhile, two others were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities. They were identified as Asif, 35, and Anees, 50.
Liaqatabad SSP Khawaja Naveed said the Lyari gang was probably behind these target killings and the police are carrying out operations against these elements. An FIR, No 578\10, under section 302/34-7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) has been registered against 17 accused, including Noor Mohammad alias Baba Ladla, Aijaz, Abid, Nawab Ali, Lal Mohammad Magsi, Mullah Raju, Jawad, Iqbal, Akbar, Kashif Servaiz, Rasheed alias Waja, Imdad, Asghar and others. The police have criminal records of four nominated people.
