Filling the void: Three lawyers proposed for judges’ post
The nominees include two lawyers from Karachi, and one from Hyderabad.
KARACHI:
The names of three lawyers have been proposed for elevation to the post of judge of the Sindh High Court, where two of the judges are on leave while another two are set to retire this year, The Express Tribune learnt on Saturday.
According to judicial sources, the high court’s Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai is to retire on April 4, while Justice Nisar Muhammad Sheikh is to retire on November 17 this year.
On the other hand, the two incumbent judges currently on leave are Justice Shaukat Ali Memon and Muhammad Tasnim. This has left the high court, which was already functioning with 30 judges against the sanctioned strength of 40, with 26 judges striving to deal with the cases.
Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court Bar Association has proposed the names of three lawyers to SHC Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar to consider for elevation as additional judges to the high court. The nominees include two lawyers from Karachi, including Shahab Sarki, the former secretary of the SHCBA, and Advocate Hasan Akbar. The third nominee, Iqbal Kalhoro, is from Hyderabad.
