Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate, will contest the upcoming elections in India from Vadodara constituency in Gujarat, NDTV reported on Wednesday.

Wednesday's announcement means that Modi will be contesting from at least two constituencies including Gujarat, his traditional stronghold, and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

The decision was taken at an all-day meeting today in Delhi that brought together the BJP's most senior leaders including Narendra Modi.

Modi has never contested a national election and is a member of the Gujarat legislature.

Earlier, the sitting BJP member of Parliament from the Vadodara, Balkrishna Shukla, had said he would be glad to vacate his seat in favour of Narendra Modi, if the party decides to field him from the constituency.
