KARACHI: Former Test cricketer Basit Ali, who was recently appointed cricket consultant zone one by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has asked for a cement pitch to be prepared at the practice area of the National Stadium in Karachi.

“I want to start working on my assignment once the World Twenty20 finishes,” Ali told The Express Tribune.

“My first assignment is to work on the U16 players and have already asked the local coaches to identify talented players to be sent from Larkana and Dera Murad Jamali. The youngsters can be groomed to play on different pitches with bounce, seam movement or spin in them and for that I have asked for a cement pitch.”

Zone one comprises of Karachi, Hyderabad, Dera Murad Jamali and Larkana. After training players from interior Sindh the former Test batsman is also expected to hone the skills of players from Karachi in the second phase.

Meanwhile, Ali added that he was keen on promoting school and college cricket because it would improve things at the grassroot level.

“I want to improve the standard of cricket played at school and college level.” Ali who played 19 Tests for Pakistan in the 90s has also asked for renovation of the gymnasium at the Test venue.
