KARACHI:
Players from six foreign teams will compete in the 2014 Pakistan Day International Bridge Championship that will take place from March 21 at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Karachi.
This will be the return of international bridge to the country after a long lapse. The last mega event for the mind sport took place in 1998.
The championship will feature two teams from China along with Turkey, Jordan, UAE and UK.
Twin brothers Justin Hackett and Jason Hackett will represent the UK along with Brian Senior, a British bridge star.
“So far six teams have confirmed their participation for this mega event,” event organiser Syed Ameer Hasan told The Express Tribune.
“We are still hoping for a seventh country to compete as well. It’s going to be the first big event after 1998, when many international teams came to Pakistan. We are excited and the response from the local players for the championship has been very positive.”
The championship will take place for three days, featuring 33 teams from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad including the foreign teams.
The first day will see the 62 pairs compete against each other, while the team championship will begin on March 22.
The event is taking place in collaboration with the Mind Sports Association of Pakistan.
According to Hasan it will help send out a positive message to the international community and will improve Pakistan’s image.
“Pakistan is rich in sports culture and foreign countries should send their teams to participate in different sports events taking place.”
