Famine in Thar: Govt announces Rs10,000 aid for each affected family
The aid will be disbursed through BISP cards.
Following on from the Rs1 billion aid package announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier this week, the finance ministry on Thursday decided to provide aid worth Rs 10,000 to each affected family through the existing Income Support Cards in two quarters.
In a meeting chaired by the finance minister Ishaq Dar at the ministry on Thursday, it was decided that the aid will be channeled through existing income support cards.
It was revealed in the meeting that there are 77,000 families registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) live in Tharparker. Each recipient in this area already receive Rs3,600 per month under the welfare programme.
It was decided on Thursday that these families will now receive an additional Rs6,400 for the next two quarters.
The finance minister directed the concerned officials to ensure transparency and good governance for delivery of aid.
The meeting was also attended by Minister for Information and National Heritage Senator Pervez Rashid, Chairman NDMA Maj Gen Saeed Aleem, Finance Secretary Dr Waqar Masood, Advisor to the Finance Ministry Rana Assad Amin and senior officials of the Finance Ministry.
