New US ambassador takes charge
Cameron Munter is a career diplomat and close aide of US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan.
ISLAMABAD:
The new US ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Cameron Munter, on Tuesday took charge of his new assignment.
Munter, who along with his wife Marilyn Wyatt arrived on Tuesday morning, met Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir at the Foreign Office. The new ambassador will present his credentials to President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday, said a US Embassy statement.
Munter, who is a career diplomat and a close aide of US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, participated in the recently-concluded Pak-US strategic dialogue in Washington. Fifty-six year- old Munter is known for his tough talking and the important role he played in redefining America’s role in countries facing difficult situations. His previous assignment was as ambassador to Serbia. He was also the first leader of the first Provincial Reconstruction Team in Mosul, Iraq, in 2006.
In Washington, Munter was the director for Central Europe at the National Security Council, executive assistant to the counsellor at the State Department and chief of staff of the Nato Enlargement Ratification Office.
For the next three years, Munter will be the key person to implement America’s policy in the region, particularly with reference to Afghanistan, where the nine-year-old US-led battle is entering a decisive phase.
