Ethics in medicine: Doctors stress need to check organ transplantation

Speakers advocated the need to implement the deceased donor programme in Pakistan.

Renowned renal physician, Professor Jeremy Chapman, the former president of the World Transplantation Society, has stressed the need to muster community support to ensure ethical and quality organ transplantation programmes in any society.

He was speaking at the concluding session of a post-graduate training course on renal transplantation organised by the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation on Friday. The week-long course was also attended by three other physicians from Australia.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Chapman pointed out that Pakistan was not the only country that faced the issue of unethical transplantation and commercial trade of organs. These problems also existed in many developed countries, he explained.

He, however, lauded the services of SIUT in extending ethical and international standard transplantation facilities to patients. He also advocated the need to implement the deceased donor programme in Pakistan. Prof Chapman was of the belief that the programme would go a long way in saving lives.
