KARACHI:
The Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) has vowed to approach the police and register a case for the alleged extrajudicial killing of their party worker.
Syed Farman Shah was killed on Monday evening in Surjani Town under mysterious circumstances. Rangers officials claimed that the deceased was a member of a splinter group of militants and was killed after an exchange of fire when Rangers troops conducted a raid at the militant’s hideout. One hand grenade and a Kalashnikov were also recovered from his possession.
“We have nothing more to say as we already said that he was killed during an encounter,” said a spokesperson for Rangers while talking to The Express Tribune. The body of the deceased was kept at Edhi morgue, Sohrab Goth, where his family identified him on Tuesday night. After his identification, the ASWJ claimed the affiliation of the victim with the party.
“If they believed that they can restore peace in the city by killing our innocent workers in fake encounters, I offer myself first,” said ASWJ leader Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi.
The ASWJ claimed that Shah along with nine other ASWJ men was detained by LEAs during a raid in Lasbella on January 29, adding that the others were later released, while Shah remained in custody. Officials had also assured the party of his release. “It is a 100 per cent extrajudicial killing,” claimed the spokesperson.
An FIR of the encounter was also registered at the Surjani police station. “We do not know how Shah was killed,” said Surjani DSP Shaukat Shahani, while talking to The Express Tribune. Meanwhile, parts of the city, including Lasbella, Patel Para and Guru Mandir, remained tense on Wednesday during the funeral prayers of the ASWJ activist. The funeral prayers were offered in Lasbella on Wednesday and he was laid to rest in Khamosh Colony graveyard.
