Court boycott continues on day two across Sindh
The attack in Islamabad district courts has brought legal activity to a halt.
SUKKUR/KARACHI:
Court proceedings remained suspended for the second consecutive day as the legal fraternity boycotted work to protest the terrorist attack in Islamabad.
Hundreds of cases that were fixed before the courts could not be taken up due to the absence of lawyers. The judges had to ‘discharge’ the board of cases fixed before them for the day. The SHC building, the city courts and the Malir district courts remained deserted as members of the bar associations stayed at their offices.
However, the urgent cases were heard by the judges in their chambers.
Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar urged the judicial officers and legal fraternity to remain strong in the face of the threats of terrorism in the country. Baqar was addressing a general body meeting of the members of the SHC Bar Association held at its Iftikhar Hall to condemn Monday’s killings. SHC Bar Association president ZK Jatoi also demanded the government bring its perpetrators to justice.
Sukkur
Responding to the call of the Pakistan Bar Council, lawyers throughout rural Sindh also boycotted court proceedings and observed a ‘black day’ against the terrorist attack that claimed more than a dozen lives.
Prominent lawyers, including Qurban Ali Malano, Shafqat Rahim and Hadi Bux Bhatt, condemned the cowardly act, saying that it is because of the government’s lax attitude that terrorists feel free to do as they please.
