KARACHI:
The Sindh transport department has given a 10-day deadline to the six-seater and nine-seater rickshaw owners to remove their vehicles from the main arteries of the city.

The government has also asked the body makers of these public transport vehicles to wind-up their operations. Transport Minister Mumtaz Hussain Jakhrani told The Express Tribune that the department has issued notices to the body makers of these rickshaws to suspend their operations and, after 10 days, the department will launch a drive against them.

"These vehicles are illegal and they cause many road accidents," said Jakhrani, adding that the transport department will not let these vehicles ply on the main roads of the city. "They (drivers and owners) should take their rickshaws to link roads and streets. We can't allow them to play with the lives of people," he warned.

Jakhrani further said that they will make legislations to bring the responsibility of the issuance of vehicle fitness certificates under the transport department. Vehicle fitness centres are currently working under the traffic police. "We have asked the Traffic AIG and DIG to clear main roads of these illegal vehicles. We will launch a joint campaign against six-seater, nine-seater and 12-seater rickshaws after the deadline."

Traffic police DIG Arif Hanif said they take action against illegal rickshaws every day. "We will launch a campaign with the help of the transport department against the six-seater and 12-seater rickshaws as they are illegal." He said that he is not aware whether the transport department has written to them or not on this issue.
