KARACHI:

A district and sessions court granted, on Tuesday, bail to a Rangers official who was arrested in connection with the killing of a man on Friday as he was engaged in a brawl with his wife.

Fida Hussain Abbasi, a judicial magistrate in district Central, granted bail to the Rangers official after he was produced before the court. The judge, however, linked his release with the submission of a surety amount of Rs2.4 million. As the Rangers official couldn't produce the surety amount, the court sent him to jail on judicial remand till March 15. The official will be released whenever he deposits the surety amount.

When asked to explain as to why he opened fire at 30-year-old Zeeshan, the official told the court that he was performing his duties on the rooftop of a mosque on Feb 28 when he saw a woman screaming for help. The official said that he saw 10 to 12 people surrounding a woman, adding that one of the men was hitting her and from his position, it seemed that the men were attempting to kidnap the woman.

He said that the men were pushing the woman towards a black car that was parked nearby, adding that he asked them to stop but they ignored him. The official said that he opened fire with the intent to injure the man but ended up killing him by mistake.
