Lahore students on top

As many as 120 students appearing in the June and November 2013 Cambridge examination series have excelled in various subjects with 29 students achieving highest scores in a particular subject in Pakistan while another 25 achieving highest in the world.
The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards released by the Cambridge International examinations every year lists students who have performed extraordinarily in the examinations and have achieved distinctions either in the region or the world.
The list also includes students ‘high achievers’, who have exhibited outstanding performance in subjects which are not widely opted for in Pakistan.
This year as many as 200,000 students participated in the examinations from across the country. However two of the subjects, Pakistan Studies and Islamiyat, in the June examination series were re-administered after CIE announced that the question papers had been compromised.
Approximately 15,000 students had to retake their examination in the said subjects. The list of achievers was released to schools and educational institutions last week by the CIE.
A statement issued by the CIE in reference to the achievers list read: “The winning learners out-performed thousands of candidates worldwide who sat examinations in Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS Level and Cambridge International A Level.”
Top in the World
Subjects ranging from Economics, Business Studies, and Commerce to Environmental Management and History, English Literature, 23 students topped in the world in various subjects in the June and November Cambridge O Level examination series. While as many as four students topped in the world in Additional Mathematics from the Lahore Grammar Schools, LACAS and the Chenab College Jhang another five students topped in Second Language Urdu.
While only one student topped in the world in International Mathematics in the November series of Cambridge IGCSE examinations, four students topped in the world during the June and November Cambridge International A Level examinations in subjects including chemistry, Literature in English, Applied ICT and Islamic Studies.

Just one student topped in Pakistan in the Cambridge IGCSE examinations in Information and Communication Technology, two students topped in Pakistan in the Cambridge International AS Level.

Bagging the Best across Seven Cambridge O Levels Award, Adeel Mahmood of the Lahore College of Arts and Sciences (LACAS) stood first in both Pakistan and Lahore in the Cambridge O Level June examination series.
He has also topped in the world in the subject of Additional Mathematics. Vice Principal at LACAS Khalid Saifur says Mahmood had also topped in one other O level subject in the previous year.
With the school bagging similar awards over the past 4 years, he says it is a matter of pride for the institution. “The message being sent through this is very loud and clear. Pakistani students are very hard working and the private school system in the country is performing at par with global standards.”
The school will be awarding their students Mahmood and Usama Mumtaz Ali, who topped in Lahore in English, in a ceremony scheduled for April.
Vice Principal and Head of Department for O Levels at the Cathedral School, Murad Lal claims their students have been landing exceptional grades since 2005.
This year, Noor ul Huda topped in Lahore in the subject of Religious Studies (Bible Knowledge). Lal says students have previously also topped in the same subject from the school. “These achievements hold great meaning for students, not just as accomplishments but also offers greater opportunities for their future … and obviously it ia matter of great honour for the school too.”
While students hailing from different branches of the Beaconhouse School System have managed to bag 16 different positions and awards, out of which 12 sat the AS and A Level International Cambridge examinations while 4 sat the O level and the IGCSE examinations.
Shirmeen Ali of the career counselling section of the Beaconhouse Liberty Campus says the institution is committed to offering students right counselling.
“We have counseling sections in each of our branches and we believe students have a right to be advised which areas to opt for in line with their interests, strong points and performance,” says Ali.
Students, she says are now more open to experiment with new areas and pursue diverse subjects including Thinking Skills and Human and Social Biology – for both of these subjects students of the school has received various distinctions in 2013 examination series.
