KARACHI:
At least seven people were shot dead in separate incidents of target killing, including the two men killed 15 minutes apart, on Monday.
A young man associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was shot dead in Orangi Town. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Sarwar Abbas, son of Manzar Abbas. The incident took place when the victim left home to buy vegetables. Mominabad Police officials, quoted the witnesses as saying that armed motorcyclists intercepted the victim, who was also on a motorcycle, and opened fire at him. The victim left his motorcycle and ran towards a nearby shop to save his life. However, the culprits followed him and shot him multiple times before escaping. Abbas died on the spot and his body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
SHO Ahmed Butt said that, seven months ago, the victim’s eldest brother, Haider, was also shot and killed in the same manner in Orangi Town. “Though the deceased was an MQM supporter, we suspect that he and his brother were killed on sectarian grounds,” said Butt.
However, it seems that the target killers were not done as only 15 minutes after the incident, another man, associated with the Dawat-e-Islami, was shot dead in Orangi Town’s Chishti Nagar. The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Shahid, son of Ameeruddin. Police officials said that the deceased used to work at the Zarri factory. SHO Tasadduq Waris suggested that this incident was also motivated by sectarian differences and was likely carried out by the same group of target killers.
A medical store owner and his salesman were killed in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Aziz Bhatti police officials said that the Muhammad Sajid and his salesman, Shams, were standing outside the store when unidentified men arrived in a car and shot at them. As a result, both were injured. However, they both died during treatment. Police officials said that it is likely the target of the culprits was the owner of the store. They added that the incident apparently took place over a refusal to pay extortion money.
A young man was also shot dead in the Bakra Piri area of Malir City. The deceased was identified as Nasir Baloch. DSP Khalid Khan said that Baloch was sitting at a teashop near his home. Two men came and asked his name, after which they shot him twice in the head and chest before fleeing. Two more were also killed in Baldia Town and Soldier Bazaar. Meanwhile, two young men were found dead from Pak Colony.
