KARACHI:

Lyari once again turned into a battlefield as clashes between members of two rival gangs claimed at least three lives, while injuring three others.

Various neighbourhoods of the area were affected by the fighting as law enforcers desperately failed to bring the situation under control. The violence erupted as the members of two notorious gangs — the Baba Ladla group and the Uzair Blaoch group — clashed with the neighbourhoods resonating with excessive gunfire and the grenade explosions.

At least three people were killed and three others wounded as a result of the clash. The deceased were identified as Jamal Nasir, 60, son of Ali Mohammad Baloch, Hussian, 16, son of Abdul Rashid and Abdul Jabbar, 28, son of Abdul Sattar, while the injured as Shahbaz, Hassan and Nawaz Sharif. None of the deceased or injured were believed to be involved in the gang war.

The law enforcers, meanwhile, were not even sure about the exact death toll. “We are stuck between the people here,” said Lyari DSP Zulfiqar. “We don’t even have idea how many people have been killed or any identities.” The residents were confined to their homes while shops and businesses also remained closed due to the tense situation.
