FAISALABAD:
Police claimed on Friday to have shot dead three criminals wanted in dozens of murder and robbery cases.
City Police Officer (CPO) Haider Ashraf told the media that Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) SP Farooq Hundal had received a tip-off on Thursday.
“A police team comprising Hundal and three other CIA policemen raided a house in Chak 367-GB to arrest the robbers,” he said. Ashraf said the robbers opened fire at the policemen when they were asked to surrender. “Robbers Asif, Amjad and Mustafa were shot dead in the shootout… three other robbers escaped.”
The CPO said Asif and Mustafa were wanted in murder and robbery cases registered in Faisalabad, Okara and Sahiwal. He said police had also seized a Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol, another rifle and 119 bullets from the crime scene.
He said Asif, Amjad and Mustafa had escaped police custody on December 2, 2013, when armed men opened fire at a van carrying them in Okara.
Protest for regularisation
Scores of employees of the Public Health Engineering Department staged a demonstration on Friday to press their demand for regularisation of contractual employees.
The employees observed a complete strike and locked their offices. They also staged a sit-in outside the office of Public Health Engineering Department. The demonstrators were holding banners and placards and chanted slogans in favour of their demands.
Speaking on the occasion, Rana Muhammad Ateeq, president of the All Punjab Contract Employees Association said there were 127 contractual employees at the Public Health Engineering Department.
He appealed to the government to take notice of their plight and announce their regularisation at the earliest.
