Police sub-inspector, MQM worker killed in violent incidents in Karachi

KARACHI:
A police sub-inspector attached to the forensic branch was shot dead near Nagan Chorangi in Karachi on Monday evening.

Forensic expert, sub-inspector (SI) Aftab, son of Abdul Qayyum, was shot dead near Nagan Chowrangi within the limits of New Karachi police station. Police officials said that deceased lived in the KDA apartments in North Nazimabad and the incident took place when he was returning after withdrawing cash from an ATM.

Police officials were unsure if Aftab was killed for resisting a robbery or was a victim of target killing. SHO Chaudhry Afzal said that nothing could be said with certainty with the investigation still in preliminary stages.

Separately, a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) worker associated with Orangi Town’s MQM Unit-118 was shot dead in an act of target killing in Federal-B Area within the limits of Yousuf Plaza police station.

Police officials said that deceased was commuting on his motorcycle when unidentified armed motorcyclists shot and killed him. Further investigations into the attack were underway, officials said.

In another act of violence, a suspected gangster was shot dead in Lyari’s Kalakot area. Police officials said that deceased, later identified as Gibran, was killed during the clash between two groups of gangsters in Lyari.


Security forces make arrests

Three alleged gangsters were apprehended during a targeted operation conducted jointly by police and rangers in Dhobi Ghat area of Lyari neighbourhoods on Monday evening.

Sources in the police told The Express Tribune that the operation was launched on the information provided by the already arrested member of the gang war, Saeed alias Billa, who was arrested on the night between Sunday and Monday during treatment at Civil Hospital, Karachi.

Police officials also claim to have recovered 50 rockets, 15 hand grenades, three Kalashnikovs and hundreds of ammunitions, adding that the arrested gangsters were involved in over 50 cases of murders, robberies and other heinous cases of crime. Their identities were not disclosed.

Some of the weapons recovered bear NATO insignia and sources said investigations are underway as to how the suspects came to acquire these weapons.

In a separate raid, the Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department claims to have arrested two alleged target killers during a targeted raid in Docks area. AEC officials said that the arrested suspects were members of Lyari gang war, and were involved in at least five cases of target killings. Weapons were also recovered from their possession.

Another alleged target killer was arrested from the Gizri area of Karachi. Police officials said that the accused was involved in various cases of target killings while his identity was not disclosed.
