Embezzlement: Land acquisition collector denied bail

The Lahore High Court on Friday dismissed the bail petition of Land Acquisition collector Mian Rauf. He is accused of embezzling millions of rupees while acquiring land for the Pindi Bhattian motorway interchange. Rauf said the land had been acquired from farmers before he was appointed collector. He said he had only paid them for it. The prosecution said the land had been acquired without a mandated survey. He said Rauf had distributed Rs50.40 million among ‘claimants’ who did not even own land in the area. He said Rauf did not deserve bail as he had deprived real claimants of millions of rupees.
