FAISALABAD:

Hundreds of people belonging to Jaranwala staged a demonstration on Wednesday against police’s inability to recover a man abducted from the area five months ago.

The protestors, carrying banners and placards, gathered in front of the city district government offices and staged a sit-in at Zila Council Chowk.

They also blocked University Road for vehicular traffic.

One of the protestors, Muhammad Amjad said his brother Muhammad Arshad, a resident of Mohallah Anwarabad, had been abducted by unidentified men about five months ago.

They had demanded Rs100,000 as ransom.

He said,“Every time we went to the police station and asked about Arshad’s recovery, we were told that we would need to grease the palms of police officers to see results.”

He said the family were poor and could not pay the amount.

The protestors chanted slogans against police and demanded Arshad’s immediate recovery.

They also demanded that action be taken against police officials demanding bribes.

Civil Lines Station House Officer Afzal Cheema tried to pacify and disperse the protestors, but met with resistance. Later, he arranged a meeting between their representatives and Operations SSP.

The SSP assured them that Arshad would be recovered soon.

On his assurance, the demonstrators dispersed.
