PESHAWAR:
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chapter of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has summoned former chief minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti on February 14 over a weapons purchase scam worth Rs7 billion.
A NAB official revealed that Hoti has been summoned in light of information revealed by a distant relative, Raza Ali Khan, and former adviser to Hoti, Naiz Ali Shah, who had been arrested in the same case.
The official told The Express Tribune that the contract for procurement of weapons and other equipment was provided during Hoti’s tenure as chief executive of the province and now investigators require additional information for the purpose of which they have summoned him.
NAB suspects that out of the total Rs7 billion-worth weapons contract, an amount of Rs1.82 billion was embezzled by several high-ranking officials, both from the police and the civil government.
Former IGP Malik Naveed and Raza Ali Khan, brother-in-law of Amir Hoti’s brother Ghazan Hoti, have been sent on judicial remand to Central Jail, Peshawar.
Malik Naveed was arrested on November 21 and the accountability court granted him 56 days in NAB’s custody after which he was sent on judicial remand. Former adviser to Hoti, Naiz Ali Shah, was arrested on January 6 and was accused of receiving Rs20 million in return for clearing all legal hindrances in the procurement of weapons.
Raza Ali Khan was also arrested on January 6 and accused of having received Rs3 million for himself and Rs195 million for Ghazan Hoti, brother of former CM Haider Hoti. The main contractor, Arshad Majeed, who was also arrested in the case, revealed the names of these accused last year. Majeed later voluntarily paid Rs102 million to NAB.
Raza Ali Khan approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) for bail in the case while NAB had also filed a petition seeking further physical remand against the accused. During Wednesday’s hearing, the bench of Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Musarrat Hilali adjourned his case and ordered it to be heard on February 19.
