KARACHI:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) went to court on Monday against, what it calls, are extrajudicial killings of its workers.

The high court issued notices to the federal and provincial interior secretaries, provincial chiefs of the police and Rangers and their subordinates on this plea. Sindh High Court chief justice Maqbool Baqar, who headed the bench, also issued notices to the federal and provincial law officers to file their comments by today (Tuesday).

The petition was jointly filed by Fahad Aziz, who was allegedly picked up by the law enforcers and subjected to torture on Saturday night, his relative Abdul Aziz and MQM deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar. They cited SSP East Pir Muhammad Shah and Shah Faisal police SHO Fahim Farooqui as respondents, apart from others.

Fahad said that he hails from the Unit 79 committee of Korangi, and is an MQM member. “The respondents have recently unleashed a reign of torture against the inhabitants of urban Sindh, targeting the MQM and its workers,” the lawyer said.

The judges were informed that around eight party workers have been killed while over 45 have gone missing. “The respondents are directly responsible for such barbaric acts,” the petitioners alleged, adding that the most recent killing is of Salman, who was picked up by the law enforcers, mercilessly tortured and his mutilated body was thrown on the streets.

The petitioners pleaded to the court to declare the acts of the Karachi AIG, SSP East and Shah Faisal SHO as illegal and order their suspension. It was further requested the police authorities compensate Fahad for torturing him in custody.
