The conference, organised by the Jamoori Watan Party (JWP), directly linked the former military ruler to the killing of innocent people and the desecration of the Holy Quran in Jamia Hafsa. Representatives of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (JUI-I), Majlis Wahadat Muslimeen Pakistan, Shia Ulema Council Balochistan, Tanzeem-i-Islam Pakistan, Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-S and religious scholars took part in the conference.
Speakers heaped scorn at Musharraf for his “inhuman crimes” and held him responsible for killing thousands of Baloch people, as well as students of Jamia Hafsa in separate military operations. They assailed him for violating of the constitution, amending the Hudood Ordinance, insulting renowned scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, handing over Dr Aafia Siddiqui and Abdul Salam Asif to the US, and violating the sanctity of mosques, amongst other crimes.
Religious scholars also provided references from the Holy Quran while discussing his alleged crimes. They also asked the judiciary to take immediate steps to bring him back to the country.
Among the 36 scholars who attended the conference were Dr Maulana Attaur-Rehman, Maulana Abdul Qadir Luni, Syed Hashim Mosvi, Wilaiat Hussain Jaffari, Qari Mahrullah, Moulvi Matiullah, Zia-ul-Rehman Farooqi, Abdul Matin Akwandzada, who along with others marked their signatures on the declaration.
Speaking on the occasion, JWP president Talal Bugti said that he would go abroad and spread this declaration of religious scholars throughout the Muslim world in the effort to bringing the former dictator to justice. He vowed also to file a case before the Supreme Court in this regard and again ask the judges to take up the issue.
They unanimously were of the view that if Musharraf wanted to defend himself then he should consult with the courts because, they as religious scholars, have passed the decree in accordance with Islamic law.
