Controlling crime: Suspect killed in police encounter

Police claim the suspect was involved in a number of cases of target killings.

KARACHI:
The police claimed to have killed an alleged criminal in New Karachi on Wednesday.

Police officials said that the deceased, Javed aka Bakri, son of Basheer, was killed during an exchange of fire with the police. “He and his companion were intercepted by police personnel on routine snap-checking,” said DSP Fayyaz Khan. “But they opened fire on the police and tried to escape.”

The official said that the police also fired back in retaliation, and resultantly, he was injured, adding that he was being taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The accused was involved in targeted killing incidents of policemen, said DSP Khan, adding that the deceased was a criminal and details of his criminal record were being gathered.


Separately, at least nine suspects were apprehended during a targeted operation in Frontier Colony by Rangers. The entire area was cordoned-off and no one was allowed to enter or exit.

Rangers officials said that the operation was conducted on a tip-off, adding that they apprehended at least nine suspects, including target killers.

Weapons were also recovered from their possession. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning.
