Leghari tribe ‘crowns’ its 27th chief

Thousands of people participated in the dastaar bandi ceremony of Jamal Leghari as the new tribal after quran khwani was offered for the departed soul of Farooq Leghari.
Maulvi Tariq Jamil led the prayers on the occasion, where Jamal Khan Leghari’s dastar bandi was organised according to the Baloch tradition.
The dastar bandi or ‘turban tying’ ritual is an ancient custom where all prominent tribal elders gather to witness a new tribal leader being initiated. On Friday, former governor Punjab Ghulam Mustafa Khar, former federal minister Muhammad Ali Durrani, Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan, Sardar Abdul Rehman Khethran, Sardar Pervez Iqbal, Abdul Aleem Shah, Sheikh Muhammad Ali and thousands of people from remote areas participated in the ceremony. Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari’s eldest son Jamal Khan Leghari was born on March 10, 1966 in Dera Ghazi Khan. He passed his A-level from Aitchison College Lahore, did his graduation and also received his diploma from BCCI in banking. Jamal Leghari entered into politics in 1991 and remained a zila council member. He also held the office of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) social action programme from 1994 to 1997. Leghari then contested the national assembly election in 1997 but did not win. In 1998 he was elected to the zila council and in 2006 he was elected as a senator. He is the 27th chief of the Leghari tribe.
