Twenty days have passed since the fatal attack on senior counter terrorism officer of the Sindh police, SP Chaudhry Aslam Khan. Investigators, however, have been unable to trace the owner of the Suzuki pickup allegedly used in the suicide attack through a vehicle improvised explosive device (VIED).
The chief of the Anti-Extremists Cell of the Crime Investigation Department, SP Khan, along with his security guard and a driver, was killed in the brazen attack at Lyari Expressway on January 9, this year.
The radius of the search was extended to two to three kilometres around the blast site. Investigators were able to ascertain the identity of the suspected bomber, but have neither been able to trace the group of militants behind the attack nor the owner of the vehicle.
The chassis and engine numbers of the vehicle were fake as the excise department has no record of any such vehicle. This has also created hurdles in the investigation, but the officials seem hopeful. “We have made good progress,” CID’s investigating officer, Mazhar Mashwani, told The Express Tribune. “We will share the good news soon.”
