A strike is being observed in parts of Sindh on Saturday against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Chief Altaf Hussain's statement about the division of the province, Express News reported.

The strike was called by Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz's (JSMM), a Sindh’s nationalist party.

Businesses are closed today in various parts of Sukkur including Shahi Bazaar, Sarafi Bazaar, Ghanta Ghar Chowk.

There is a complete shutter-down strike in Larkana Division, Nawabshah, Daulatpur, Sakrand, Qazi Ahmed and Tando Muhammad Khan as well as Matli, Sehwan, Bhan Saeedabad, Jamshoro, Kotri and Badin. There is also a partial strike in Hyderabad and Matiari.

Security arrangements have been increased as a result of the strike, and petrol pumps and CNG stations have been closed.

Attendance in offices and schools is also negligible.

Case filed - FIR registered?

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on Saturday (today) against the JSMM Chairperson Shafi Muhammad Burfat and nine others for cracker attacks that shook the province yesterday.

Unidentified miscreants had carried out as many as 23 cracker attacks in Hyderabad, Dadu, Larkana and Jamshoro districts, and later Karachi. The FIR was registered under the anti-terrorism act at the police station in Bhan Saeedabad today.

Yesterday, the police had claimed to have arrested four suspects of JSMM including Mukhtiar Laghari. Police had said that they had found an illegal pistol in Laghari’s possession.

The suspects were taken to an undisclosed location.

JSMM's letter

On January 24, Burfat had also sent a letter to British High Commissioner to Pakistan Philip Barton to take notice of Altaf's statement, The Express Tribune had learnt.

“The JSMM considers Britain a civilised country and have been appealing it in its protest demonstrations to resolve the problems of the Sindhi nation. For these reasons, the party has called for a strike on January 25 throughout Sindh to protest in front of the British government and we hope that being a civilised nation, the British government will honour our demand and take serious action against Altaf Husaain,” Burfat’s letter had read.
